Weaving Study Group

The FGBR Weaving Study Group is a congenial collection of folks whose primary fiber focus is weaving. Skills of members range from beginner to very advanced, which provides a wonderful knowledge base for anyone seeking help on a weaving project. We very much enjoy helping and supporting one another, as well as celebrating each member’s accomplishments.

The group meets the third Wednesday of the month from 10:30 to 12:30, both in person and by Zoom. Beginning in October of 2022, we will be meeting at 73B Main Street in Round Hill, VA, otherwise known as the studio above the garage. Meetings focus on sharing current projects, solving individual weaving conundrums, and show and tell. We welcome all comers, so feel free to join us. If you have any questions, please email the group coordinator, Debbie Deutsch, at ddeutsch51@gmail.com.

Our projects and plans vary from year to year. Sometimes we have chosen to weave exchange projects such as napkins or placemats. For the 2022-2023 year we have decided to do a supported independent study. We have found 4 different warp threading designs that can morph into anywhere from 4 to 15 different patterns depending on the tie-up used for the treadles. Also, thanks to the collection of one of our members, we will be exploring weaving on antique barn looms, as well as having an opportunity for time on an 8-shaft/14 treadle Gallinger loom, all housed in the studio above the garage.

For those either with no weaving experience or a desire to weave on an inkle loom, the group’s traveling project is inkle weaving. It is being coordinated by member Ibby Dickson (edickson36@gmail.com). The group also has a donated antique 8-shaft Ad-A-Harness Macomber loom. The loom is reserved for demonstrating at fairs and festivals during September and October. The rest of the year, it will be reserved for individual use in the studio above the garage. Contact the group coordinator, Debbie Deutsch, (ddeutsch1951@gmail.com) to reserve time on the Macomber.
